Spoed voor Spoed - Emergency Care for Emergency Care!
(ENGLISH BELOW) In september trekken Emily Vandamme en Elke De Saer, beide urgentieartsen, voor Daktari Project vzw naar Oeganda om het Kilembe Mines Hospital te ondersteunen. Help ons mee de nieuwe spoedafdeling klaarmaken voor haar eerste patiënten.
Een nieuwe spoedafdeling voor Kilembe
Recent werd er een nieuwe kinderafdeling gebouwd in Kilembe Mines Hospital. Aansluitend wordt er ook een eenvoudige, maar volwaardige spoedafdeling opgericht. Hierdoor kunnen kinderen, zwangere vrouwen, verkeersslachtoffers en andere ernstig zieke patiënten sneller de juiste eerste zorg krijgen. Met deze nieuwe spoeddienst zet de gezondheidszorg in de regio een belangrijke stap vooruit. Maar een gebouw alleen redt geen levens. Daarom willen we ervoor zorgen dat deze spoeddienst beschikt over het essentiëke materiaal én dat alle zorgverleners weten hoe ze levensbedreigende situaties moeten aanpakken.
Onze doelen
1. Het volledige ziekenhuispersoneel een basis spoedopleiding geven
We willen alle 54 zorgverleners (artsen, verpleegkundigen en vroedvrouwen) laten deelnemen aan een 5-daagse Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course, gericht op de ABCDE-benadering van een ernstig zieke patiënt. Deze opleiding wordt gegeven door Oegandese instructeurs, verbonden aan African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM). We kiezen bewust voor opleiding door lokale professionals in plaats van zelf opleiding te geven, omdat dit duurzamer is, opvolging verzekerd is, deelnemers een officieel certificaat ontvangen en ze de mogelijkheid krijgen om door te groeien tot trainer.
Kostprijs voor deze opleiding per deelnemer bedraagt € 60 inclusief 5-daagse opleiding, cursusmateriaal, certificaat, transport en lunch.
De opgedane kennis door de zorgverleners kan enkel toegepast worden, indien de spoeddienst uitgerust is met basis apparatuur waaronder:
- Herbruikbare beademingsballon: 50 euro
- Glucometer: 100 euro
- Zuurstofsaturatiemeter: 700 euro
- Zuurstofconcentrator: 1200 euro
- Aspiratietoestel: 1200 euro
- Patiëntenmonitor: 1800 euro
3. De bouw van de nieuwe spoeddienst afwerken
De bouw van de nieuwe spoeddienst is volop aan de gang, maar om de afdeling volledig operationeel te maken is nog € 6.000 nodig.
- € 1.500 is nodig om de wachtzaal en triageruimte af te werken.
- € 4.500 is nodig om de spoedruimte af te werken. Daar zullen drie acute bedden worden voorzien, zodat ernstig zieke patiënten snel en veilig kunnen worden opgevangen en behandeld.
Hoe kan jij hierbij helpen?

Emergency Care for Emergency Care – Help equip Kilembe’s first emergency department!
In September, Emily Vandamme and Elke De Saer, both emergency medicine specialists, will travel to Uganda on behalf of Daktari Project vzw to support Kilembe Mines Hospital. Help us prepare the new emergency department for its first patients.
A new emergency department for Kilembe
A new children’s ward was recently built at Kilembe Mines Hospital. As a next step, a simple but fully functional emergency department is being established. This will allow children, pregnant women, road traffic victims and other critically ill patients to receive the right initial care more quickly. This new emergency department represents an important step forward for healthcare in the region. But a building alone does not save lives. Therefore, we want to ensure that this emergency department has the essential equipment it needs and that all healthcare workers know how to manage life-threatening situations.
Our goals
1. Provide basic emergency care training for all hospital staff
We want all 54 healthcare workers (doctors, nurses and midwives) to participate in a 5-day Basic Emergency Care (BEC) Course, focusing on the ABCDE approach to critically ill patients.
This training will be delivered by Ugandan instructors affiliated with the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM). We deliberately choose training by local professionals rather than providing the training ourselves, because this approach is more sustainable, ensures follow-up, allows participants to receive an official certificate, and gives them the opportunity to become trainers themselves in the future.
The cost of this training per participant is €60, including the 5-day course, training materials, certificate, transport and lunch.
2. Provide essential quality medical equipment
The knowledge gained by healthcare workers can only be put into practice if the emergency department is equipped with basic medical equipment, including:
Reusable bag-valve-mask: €50
Glucometer: €100
Pulse oximeter: €700
Oxygen concentrator: €1,200
Suction machine: €1,200
Patient monitor: €1,800
3. Complete the construction of the new emergency department
The construction of the new emergency department is currently underway, but an additional €6,000 is still needed to make the department fully operational.
€1,500 is needed to complete the waiting room and triage area.
€4,500 is needed to complete the emergency treatment area. This space will include three acute care beds, allowing critically ill patients to be received and treated quickly and safely.
