Over the last year, the hospital staff have been working hard to rebuild the hospital and make it more comfortable for patients and their families. We are thrilled to give you an overview of some amazing realizations of the last couple of months! The construction of the incinerator is nearly finished. This is a crucial instrument for waste processing at the hospital. The neonatology department has gotten a new roof and a fresh coat of paint, creating a bright and welcoming space for the tiniest patients. A new kitchen was constructed. Here, families of hospitalized patients prepare their family members a nutritious meal. Thank you to everybody in Uganda and Belgium who made this possible! Het afgelopen jaar heeft het ziekenhuispersoneel hard gewerkt om het ziekenhuis te herbouwen en het comfortabeler te maken voor patiënten en hun families. We zijn verheugd om je een overzicht te geven van enkele geweldige verwezenlijkingen van de afgelopen maanden! De bouw van de verbrandingsoven is bijna voltooid. Dit is een essentieel instrument voor afvalverwerking in het ziekenhuis. De neonatologieafdeling heeft een nieuw dak en een frisse verflaag gekregen. Het is een aangename ruimte voor de allerkleinste patiënten. Een nieuwe keuken is klaar voor gebruik! Hier bereiden families van opgenomen patiënten een voedzame maaltijd voor hun familielid. Een grote dankjewel aan iedereen in Uganda en België die dit mogelijk heeft gemaakt!
***English version*** Thanks to your support and the efforts of the local KMH team, we were able to purchase a new ultrasound machine and two new oxygen concentrators. This will save many lives in the Rwenzori Mountains. ***Nederlandse versie*** Dankzij jullie steun en de inzet van het lokale KMH team konden we samen een nieuw echotoestel en twee nieuwe zuurstoftanken aankopen. Hierdoor zullen er vele levens gered worden in het Rwenzori gebergte.
Wat een fantastisch kerstcadeau! Twee creatieve dames, Leen en Caroline besloten hun schouders te zetten onder een kerstactie t.v.v. Daktari Project vzw. Ze besloten op deze manier een steentje bij te dragen tot het aankopen van medische toestellen voor het nieuwe ziekenhuis. Met hun fleurige kerststukken zamelden ze €2505 in !! Dit bedrag gaat integraal naar het Kilembe Mines Hospital in Kilembe. Een dikke merci aan deze twee straffe creatieve dames! Een welgemeende dank je wel aan alle mensen die een kerststukje kochten. As you probably suspected, unfortunately Daktari Tour 2020 will not take place in the same form as previous editions. But this does not mean that we will let this annual tradition pass unnoticed! That is why we have the three best cycling routes of recent years in store for you. After a general vote, last year's edition turned out to be your preference. That is why we make these tours available for you again. It concerns a bicycle tour of 25, 50 and 70km in and around Ghent. For the family tour of 25 km we even made a fun search with an equally nice winner's prize! Daktari Tour is expanding this year from 1 day to a full month of cycling fun. This means that you can participate in one of our cozy bubble bike rides throughout October, at a time or day that suits you. Daktari Tour team members won't be found along the route, but we provide you with a cycling plan to prevent you from getting lost. How does this all work? You can register here to cycle one of the cycling tours (25 - 50 - 70 km). You will be given the opportunity to make a free contribution to our account. If you want take up the challenge with our search, we ask a contribution of €5,- to our project. Once the registration has been processed, we will send you an email with a link to the bike tour. Dear friends of Daktari Project, after a difficult week with two subsequent floodings, the people of Kilembe and hospital staff have organized the first stage of a move to dry land. The surviving equipment is being transported to an emergency hospital’, which has been established in St Michael Nursery School and the social centre of Kasese diocese. As mentioned earlier, the future of the hospital is uncertain. Local government officials are expected on site to assess the damage from the floods. Only then can the plan to rebuild begin to take form. We hereby want to thank all our followers for their support, financial and otherwise. International media have picked up the news about the floodings in East-Africa. Two days ago, government officials came to assess the damage in Kilembe. More details about their findings are expected by the end of this week or beginning of next week. Meanwhile, the material needs for the hospital are listed. Today, Kilembe suffered a second flooding in a few days’ time. Before any restoration work could start, another unstoppable flood hit the area. In consultation with local authorities, management decided to relocate the hospital activities to Kasese diocese social centre and St Michael Nursery school. Thus, continuity of health services to the community can be ensured. Starting on monday, hospital staff will evacuate the hospital equipment that can be salvaged. There future of the current hospital site is uncertain for now. Our thoughts are with all the victims. Meanwhile, we want to thank all of our followers for the generous donations we have received so far. Your support means a lot to Daktari Project and to the community in Kilembe. Dear friends of Daktari Project, Yesterday we received the devastating news that Kilembe Mines Hospital has flooded. Due to heavy rainfall over the last few days, the river Nyamwamba near the hospital burst its banks. We are of course sadly reminded of the heavy flooding in 2013, which is the topic of our first Daktari docufilm ‘After the flood’. Once more, the damage is substantial, both material and structural, as well as financial. The medical stores were completely washed away, which is a tremendous loss of valuable resources. All but one of the patient wards are affected. The recently opened female surgical ward and the TB-isolation ward – which was nearly finished – were badly damaged. The pediatric (‘toto’) ward near the edge of the hospital grounds has suffered severe structural damage. Thanks to a quick response from the hospital staff and support, all patients were safely evacuated, and no one was injured. Nature’s cruel force has once again struck the heart of the community in Kilembe. Daktari Project vzw is starting a fundraising for the repair and restoration of the damage due to the recent flooding. In light of the corona crisis, it is currently not possible to organize an event to do so. Therefore, we’re hoping for your support through donations. Our team has plans to set up one or more smaller projects to raise money to add to this fundraising effort. We will rebuild! HOW TO DONATE? There are currently 3 options to make a donation. It was about time to update you on the Covid-19 status in Kilembe. At the Kilembe Mines Hospital (KMH) precautionary measures have been taken to tackle the virus. Every patient needing essential care is allowed in the hospital after screening for temperature and after thorough hand hygiene. Every patient is allowed one attendant and those that are critically ill can have two. Patients that show symptoms of covid-19 have to wait in an isolation tent before being seen by a doctor. The laboratory in KMH has been approved by the ministry of health of Uganda to test for covid-19. Luckily, no cases of covid-19 have been confirmed at KMH yet. Furthermore, the hospital staff has received training to manage potential cases of covid-19. Protective equipment like aprons, gloves and masks is on hand, but the amount is insufficient for all hospital staff. Unfortunately, no ventilator is available. Since the 2013 flood washed away the staff quarters, hospital staff live far away from the hospital. Cancellation of public transport, following the outbreak, has made the commute for staff very difficult. For patients, reaching the hospital is even more problematic. In the past, Uganda has always been good at handling outbreaks of epidemics, so we hope they will handle this virus as well ass they handled the previous ones. Keep up the good work

Dear Daktari friends, Exactly one year ago we (Liesbeth, Laura, Lynn and Sophie) went to Uganda to lose our heart there. This opportunity was offered to us by Daktari Project vzw. Daktari Project vzw is an organization that supports the Kilembe Mines Hospital in Western Uganda. Every year volunteers go to Kilembe several times to look with the local partners to see what the needs of the hospital are and to discuss where we can contribute. The hospital is currently building a new hospital room. This was made possible in part by your generous gifts. However, in order to completely finish the infirmary, we need some help, your help! It’s almost that time of year again! Every year, the week before Christmas is ‘de Warmste Week’ in Belgium, organized by Studio Brussel’s Music for Life. Hello again Daktari friends! As you might know, our organization was founded by a group of medical students from Ghent University, and to this day, our team consists mainly of highly enthusiastic students, nurses and doctors in training. On October 25th, we will be representing Daktari Project on Ghent University’s ‘Health Sciences Crossing Borders’ fair. There will be a broad range of sessions on international and intercultural topics related to the field of medicine and health sciences. The afternoon program includes keynote presentations by distinguished speakers, Pecha Kucha presentations, Skype sessions, and an international expo with various stands and poster sessions. Students, staff and other Ghent University stakeholders will be presenting, and so will Daktari Project! DAKTARI TOUR- On the road for Kilembe Mines Hospital. WANNEER? Zaterdag 25 juli 2015 (of ook beter gekend als de laatste zaterdag van de Gentse feesten) WAT? 1. Fietstocht - Er zijn 2 fietstochten: een 25km tocht voor het hele gezin en een fietstocht van 70 km voor de gemotiveerde fietser. - Op beide fietstochten zal er een bevoorradingspost aanwezig zijn. - We werken met een vrije start, concreet betekent dit dat u op uw eigen tempo kunt vertrekken tussen 13u en 15u.
